Gay Men of African Descent

Embracing diversity. Building community.
Created to empower black gay men at the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) was formed to bridge the gap between what was often thought of as mutually exclusive: the battles of the Gay Liberation Movement and the battles of the Racial Justice Movements. GMAD began in 1986 as a weekly forum to discuss the particular issues of black gay men. Today, GMAD continues its tradition of supporting black gay men by providing drop-in groups, as well as age and need appropriate activities and counseling. This includes a drop-in center for seniors, young-men-that-have-sex-with-men’s health and wellness counseling, street outreach, and HIV testing.
